On Late Night, John Goodman talks The Conners, reveals what Lebowski quote he hears the most

John Goodman was on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Thursday, talking about what it’s like shooting the Roseanne-less The Conners. “It was really odd,” Goodman replied to host Seth Meyers’ delicately phrased preamble about the offscreen behavior that led to former star Roseanne Barr’s abrupt departure, “We used to have a lot of fun on that show, and I really missed her this year.” For the ever-gentlemanly Goodman, that diplomacy is par for the course, as he—avoiding any talk of his longtime costar’s racist outbursts—praised Barr for giving up her rights to the show so that The Conners didn’t have to be called “The Monners, or The Chonners, or anything like that.”

As to the finality of Roseanne Conner’s exit from the show (where the blue collar matriarch is revealed to have died from an overdose of opiods), Goodman joked that Roseanne’s exit was a whole lot more decisive than his character’s was. “When I died on the show, they just brought me back,” Goodman laughed, riffing, “They’re not gonna remember—nobody was watching toward the end.” For the busy Goodman (he’s starring Danny McBride’s HBO evangelist comedy The Righteous Gemstones and the Netflix legal drama Black Earth Rising, alongside Chewing Gum’s Michaela Coel), his appearance was as avuncularly unassuming as ever. (He even name-checked C.H.U.D., much to the delight of former video clerk Meyers.) Regarding his more widely-appreciated classics, to Meyers’ question about what Big Lebowski quote he gets greeted with the most, Goodman replied without hesitation, “Shut the fuck up, Donny,” which, c’mon people. At least, as Goodman says, he’s the one being quoted in such instances, unlike his costar. “It’s not as bad as when Buscemi gets it on the street,” Goodman said, of Steve Buscemi’s ever-berated Donny.
