Once director working with U2 on next film

John Carney, the Irish filmmaker best known for directing the low-budget musical Once, is working with U2 for his next project, an autobiographical coming-of-age movie titled Sing Street. The ’80s-set film, which has just been picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Company, “follows a teenage boy named Cosmo as he’s forced out of his comfortable private-school bubble and into a rough-and-tumble public school, where he forms a ragtag band, starts shooting scrappy music videos and falls in love.”

Carney’s newest film, the music-biz comedy Begin Again, opens in the U.S. on July 4. Hopefully, production on Sing Street—which is set to start shooting in Dublin this september—will go more smoothly than the last time Bono and the Edge scored a musical.
