Oolong, farewell: Starbucks is closing its Teavana stores
Starbucks is calling it quits on its tea-centric offshoot, announcing that it will close all 379 locations of its Teavana stores. The Seattle Times is reporting that the concept will be shuttered by spring 2018, even as Starbucks will continue to sell Teavana drinks at its flagship coffeeshops and in stores. Many of the underperforming locations were in malls, which itself are struggling nationwide—CNN cites a Credit Suisse report predicting up to 25 percent of Americans malls are expected to close within five years.
The news comes as Starbucks announced it was expanding in China, with plans on doubling its coffeeshops to 5,000 locations in the Chinese market by 2021. Meanwhile, at least the social media team at Teavana is taking it in strides.
