Realizing that we will be seeking comfort or catharsis in cinema now more than ever, Paramount has announced it’s remaking the delightful and weepy dramedy, Terms Of Endearment. What’s more is, according to The Wrap, Empire impresario Lee Daniels is in talks to helm the film, which will reportedly star Oprah Winfrey. Daniels previously directed Winfrey in his 2013 film, Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
Representatives for the studio and talent declined to comment, but The Wrap’s sources say Paramount has secured the rights to the project. The 1983 original was directed by James L. Brooks, and starred Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger as a mother and daughter with a contentious yet loving relationship. Jeff Daniels was in it, too, and he played an asshole, while Jack Nicholson had a charming turn as an aging lothario/astronaut. Brooks won three Oscars for his film, while Nicholson nabbed a Best Supporting Actor. MacLaine also took home a Best Actress statuette, and it’s not hard to see why.
