The prison kitchen played a huge role in the first season of Orange Is The New Black. It was the facilitator of drug smuggling, racial power shifts, feminine-product sandwiches, and much more. And this fall, fans will be able to get a taste of it with Orange Is The New Black: The Cookbook.
The book will contain 65 recipes, such as Red’s Chicken Kiev and Miss Claudette’s Coconut Cake, but it will be more of a collector’s item than anything, including photos and things like Taystee’s suggested prison reading list and recipe notes from the characters. There’s no word yet on whether it will teach the art of brewing toilet hooch, though there will be a recipe for something called Prison Punch. Piper Kerman, whose real-life experience inspired the show, previously shared her recipe for “prison cheesecake” with NPR, which will hopefully come into play sometime in season two. The cookbook is available for pre-order here and will be released on October 14.
