IDW announced earlier today that it is launching an Orphan Black comic-book series in 2015. The publisher says it “will not be a clone of the TV show, but will feature some all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of Orphan Black.” IDW has a history of publishing comic-book-adapted TV shows; it retired its Doctor Who title earlier this year (the license was picked up by Titan), and has also published The X-Files and CSI. Along with the announcement, the publisher released an image of the first cover by Nick Runge, who worked on IDW’s other TV-inspired lines, Angel and Spike.
Chris Ryall, IDW’s chief creative officer/editor-in-chief, said, “As the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic-book form.” IDW will work in conjunction with the Toronto-based Temple Street Productions, which produces Orphan Black, to create new clone stories. No further details about the creative team have been announced, but the speculation will surely give the Clone Club something else to talk about while we wait for next spring’s season three. Now that the show is apparently pushing forward into Project Castor, the male twin of Project Leda, perhaps the comics will give fans the opportunity to take a step back and delve into the backstories of characters like Beth Childs or Katja Obinger.
The Orphan Black cover features Sarah Manning and a number of other characters familiar to fans of the TV show—including Paul, whom the show seems to have largely pushed aside, save for shoehorning him into the second season’s final episodes. But is that clone in the lower right corner Beth Childs, or a new clone altogether?
