Our first look at Stephen Merchant’s Caliban in Logan is all white and smooth

Earlier this month, we finally got some concrete details on director James Mangold’s Logan, the upcoming third Wolverine movie. Specifically, we found out that Hugh Jackman will be playing an older and drunker incarnation of Wolverine who lives in a near future where a government-type organization has weaponized mutant kids and is using them to do bad stuff. Rather than spending his days killing children with his metal claws, though, Wolverine now takes care of an aging Professor X, who is losing control of his telepathic abilities. We also learned that Stephen Merchant will be assisting Logan as Caliban, an albino mutant whose power typically involves locating other mutants.

Now, Mangold has tweeted out a photo of Merchant as Caliban, and if you can imagine the guy in the photo up above with no hair and extremely pale skin, you’ve got a good idea of what to expect:

This doesn’t really tell us anything about Logan, but at least we get to experience what it would be like to be haunted by the ghost of Stephen Merchant.

Also, many X-Men fans have noticed that the Caliban character already appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse, but was played by Tómas Lemarquis instead of Stephen Merchant. This is prompting some of them to theorize that Logan takes place in the original, pre-Days Of Future Past timeline, or maybe even a third alternate timeline that has been mucked up in some new way. But there are a few possibilities that seem much more likely. For one, it’s entirely possible that the people making Logan simply didn’t realize/didn’t care that Caliban was already in another movie, or maybe the X-Men universe just happens to have two guys with similar superpowers who really dig The Tempest.
