Pals John Mulaney, Pete Davidson, and Jimmy Fallon are terrible at guessing each other's secrets

With former SNL writer and current stand-up star John Mulaney hosting this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, former SNL star and current purveyor of giggly late-night parlor games Jimmy Fallon thought, “Well, since he’s in the building . . . ,” and booked Mulanay for Thursday’s Tonight Show. And since Mulaney has been palling and gigging around with current SNL star and amiable public spectacle Pete Davidson—also presumably wandering the 30 Rock halls—Fallon invited the duo to come and goof around for a game of true confessions. After a suspiciously long time spent explaining the rules (“Yeah, I should have read the emails,” confessed Davidson), each of the three comics took turns straight-facedly reading out a supposedly true fact about themselves, leaving the other two a minute to try and ferret out the truth. You get it.

As anyone who’s been following the online evidence of the friendship between the buttoned-down Mulaney and the frequently button-less Davidson knows, the comedians’ unlikely partnership is a real and affectionate one. (Mulaney jokes that, walking down the street, they look like “an NBA coach and a troubled rookie.”) In the sit-down interview after the shenanigans, Mulaney gleefully shared the Instagram post showing Mulaney and Davidson swapping signature wardrobes, and the widely ridiculed article whose headline asked, “Who is John Mulaney, Pete Davidson’s friend?” (Dude just won an Emmy, pop culture site that doesn’t do its research. C’mon, son.) Still, both had to think pretty hard when contemplating whether one of their neighbors was arrested by the FBI for being a cannibal, or whether the other went on vacation with notably imperious SNL boss Lorne Michaels to Jamaica when just 20 years old. (Both figured out pretty quickly that Fallon’s tale of waking up in a Nashville hotel room after starting the night drinking with a country music star in New York was within the realm of the possible.)
