Paramount planning annual Paranormal Activity sequel

Like a state fair dutifully resetting the spring-loaded skeletons of its haunted house ride, Paramount has officially confirmed plans to produce another Paranormal Activity in 2012—presumably in time for Halloween weekend again, so that moviegoers can mark the passing of another year. That strategy certainly paid off last year, when Paranormal Activity 3 not only had October’s biggest opening weekend ever at $54 million, but also had the all-time highest-grossing debut for a horror film, confirming that audiences are still hungry for the simple thrills of shaky camcorder footage of people being startled and occasionally levitated. The studio has not yet indicated whether the series plans to delve even further back into the history of the franchise’s haunted family using even more outdated home video formats, or whether we’re edging ever closer to seeing their ancestors terrorized on recently discovered zoetropes.
