Paris’ Bataclan concert hall to reopen with Pete Doherty show
Pete Doherty will be the first musician to headline Bataclan in Paris since the deadly terror attack that led to its indefinite closure last autumn, Variety reports. While the famed concert hall has not officially announced its reopening date, Doherty has announced a November 16 performance date scheduled at the venue. That will be three days after the one-year anniversary of the ISIS shooting on the premises that left 89 people dead and more than 200 wounded.
Eagles of Death Metal—who were mid-performance when terrorists entered the theater with guns and suicide vests last year—had originally promised to play the Bataclan’s first show upon reopening, but frontman Jesse Hughes’ recent accusations of complicity on the part of theater security (for which he subsequently apologized) might have soured that plan.
Management for the Bataclan has stated that planned renovations between now and the scheduled November reopening will not impact the music venue’s layout. “We wish to preserve the warmth and conviviality, maintain the popular and festive spirit that has always defined [the Bataclan],” they told Variety.
After Doherty—who will be touring in support of his second solo album, which the Libertines co-frontman is in the process of finishing—Youssou N’Dour and the Super Etoile de Dakar will perform at the Bataclan on November 18, Nada Surf on December 2, and MZ on December 3.
