If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around, does it make a sound? But, more importantly, if Sarah Silverman makes a Paris Hilton joke at an awards show, and Paris Hilton isn't there to grimace uncomfortably in the audience, is the joke really that funny?

We may never have a satisfactory answer to that last question, but it doesn't matter because at last night's MTV Movie Awards host Sarah Silverman masterfully demonstrated that Paris Hilton jokes aren't always lame. On the contrary, the key to a funny Paris Hilton joke is telling the joke in front of Paris Hilton while a giant screen broadcasts her seething anger and humiliation.

Well, that and not putting the joke on a t-shirt.
