Peaer goes searching on its self-titled sophomore album

For his second album under the Peaer moniker, Peter Katz opted to spruce things up a bit. While Peaer’s debut felt deliberately muted—from the all-lowercase treatment of its title to songs named “The Dark Spot”—Peaer sees Katz opening up and letting a bit of light in. The A.V. Club is streaming all of the record below, and while it’s easy to pick out certain influences here and there, Katz works to make each one fit his needs. “Third Law” sounds like the best dirges on Pedro The Lion albums—his treatment of the line, “You have to really fucking want it” sounds eerily like David Bazan—and, elsewhere, he’s pulling from the discordant warbles of Pile. It’s a record that routinely sees Katz searching for some sort of catharsis. And, whether or not he’s found it, he makes the journey sound pretty good.

Peaer is out September 30 on Tiny Engines and pre-orders are available now.
