People at E! choose to pick up The People’s Choice Awards

According to Deadline, CBS will no longer be home to The People’s Choice Awards, as the E! network has now picked up the exclusive broadcast and streaming rights to the award show. Also, E! will take over the ceremony’s social and voting platforms, so the people will have to make their choices through the new network’s systems as well. In a statement, E! said that the awards are a “natural extension” of the network’s own pop culture and celebrity focus, and it’s “excited to evolve and supercharge this fan-centered event for the next generation in a way that only E! can.”

Of course, something doesn’t jump from a major network like CBS to the home of the Kardashians without a good reason, and the Deadline story points out that the People’s Choice Awards’ ratings have been regularly declining “for the past few years.” In fact, the most recent ceremony (which aired in January) pulled in its worst ratings ever for adults in the all-important 18-49 demographic, prompting us to wonder what might become of The People’s Choice Awards when the people no longer choose to choose.
