Sometimes dead is better, which tends to be exactly how SXSW attendees feel by day seven of the Austin film and music festival. That makes this year’s closing night selection even more appropriate, as SXSW has officially cemented Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch’s Pet Sematary remake as the sendoff to its 2019 film festival. As previously announced, the fest will open with Jordan Peele’s Us, bookending seven (or 700, who can count by then?) days of cinematic madness with psychological terror. What could be more apt for this sleep-deprived week of film, music, beer, and activations (so many activations) in Austin, Texas?
In addition, SXSW has announced its full film lineup, including festival favorites like Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell, starring Elisabeth Moss as a self-destructive punk-rocker; zombie comedy and recent Sundance fave Little Monsters; and The Mountain, Rick Alverson’s long-awaited follow-up to Entertainment, starring Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan. 2019's Midnighters lineup features Daniel Isn’t Real, director Adam Egypt Mortimer’s follow-up to Some Kind Of Hate, starring American Honey breakout Sasha Lane, as well as Girl On The Third Floor, the directorial debut from prolific genre producer Travis Stevens, whose credits include Cheap Thrills and Starry Eyes (from the duo behind Pet Sematary, no less).
