Pet Sematary's first trailer leans into the folk horror of Stephen King's scariest book

Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s Pet Sematary remake was the focus of a lengthy Entertainment Weekly preview last week, and yesterday a new poster crawled from its tacky, brambly pelt. Now, the trailer for this new take on Stephen King’s most unsettling book has arrived. Visuals from the book abound—the speeding Orinco trucks; muddy feet against clean sheets; that scalpel—but the directing duo is also leaning into a folk horror element that, in the wake of The Witch, The Ritual, and Netflix’s upcoming Apostle, feels very of the moment. Creepy kids in animal masks march their way into the fog-laden woods behind the Creeds’ new home, and, though they clearly serve as a harbinger of the story’s terrifying evolution, one wonders how they’ll factor into the story’s other cemetery.

Pet Sematary will clamber through your doggie door on April 5, 2019.
