Peter Dinklage on Tyrion Lannister's fate: "Death can be a great way out"

He may not drink as much wine, but, just like his character Tyrion Lannister, Peter Dinklage seems to know things. In a recent interview with Vulture, Dinklage discussed his new HBO movie My Dinner With Hervé, his complicated relationship with the profession of acting, and, of course, Game Of Thrones. When it came time for the interviewer to ask the question every Game Of Thrones actor has been getting for the past year—How does it end for your character?—Dinklage was understandably cagey but did hint at a potentially grim fate for poor Tyrion.

“I feel very, very—I’m trying to find the right word. I think he was given a very good conclusion. No matter what that is—death can be a great way out,” Dinklage said. Vulture notes that, while this quote could be read as the actor explicitly saying, “Tyrion is going to die,” they believe Dinklage only meant to “leave open the possibility that the character might meet that end.” That may sound like splitting hairs, but it’s probably the best we’re going to get until the final season actually airs.

If there is going to be a tragic end to Tyrion’s story, Dinklage at least believes there’s been some growth along the way, too. The early episodes of the show saw the youngest Lannister sibling acting fairly irresponsibly and routinely wallowing in his role as the family’s black sheep. “The beauty of Tyrion is that he grew out of that mode in a couple of seasons and developed a strong sense of responsibility,” Dinklage says. “not morality, because he’s always had that, but what to do with his intelligence.” Hopefully that sense of responsibility wont be his undoing. We’ll know for sure sometime next year.
