Phil Coulson is dead, long live Phil Coulson in the season 6 teaser for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
When last we saw S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Phil Coulson, he had just finished quoting Stephen Sondheim in his farewell toast, and was off to spend his remaining days on a much-deserved vacation with Melinda May. So were you wondering what became of the beloved hero? This trailer says it up front: He’s dead.
Of course, this is Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., so death isn’t necessarily permanent. (Not even for the series itself, which not only survived a brink-of-cancelation status after season five, but has amazingly already been renewed for season seven.) And by the time the above teaser trailer for the upcoming shortened season six (only a 13-episode run this round) is over, we’ve seen what you probably already suspected: Someone who looks an awful lot like Phil Coulson is still alive, even if he claims to have never heard of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Beyond that, it looks like the show is picking up where it left off—the search for the frozen body of Leo Fitz, somewhere out in space. (A brief shot of Enoch the Chronicom suggests they’ll have some unexpected help.) But there’s also discussion of Mack’s new tenure as S.H.I.E.L.D. director, a bevy of new Inhumans to deal with, and the opportunity for lots and lots of ass kicking, a good chunk of it from May and Daisy. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns this summer, though no air date has been announced yet.
