Photos of Star Wars icons in everyday settings expertly explore the wonder of the franchise

Remember those days when Dad would pack the kids into the car and drive down to the air show just to watch the A-wings do loop the loops? Photographer Thomas Dagg does. He calls his “Star Wars” series—in which he artfully inserts Star Wars icons into black-and-white photographs—“a glimpse back into my mind at eight years old.”

It’s a simple enough trick, but the execution is evocative, capturing the thrill of the original trilogy while simultaneously bypassing decades of ill will from baffling special editions, CGI missteps, and a lackluster prequel series. Instead, Dagg’s project gets right to a childhood place where, for fans of a certain age, imagining a squadron of TIE fighters flying over a quiet suburban neighborhood once seemed like the most natural thing in the world.
