Phylicia Rashad will play Apollo Creed’s widow in that Rocky spinoff
According to Showbiz 411, The Cosby Show’s Phylicia Rashad has joined Creed, the Rocky spinoff that we all agree is totally necessary. Rashad will be playing Apollo Creed’s widow, a woman who is integral to the Rocky mythos but—as far as we know—somehow escaped ever being referenced or seen in any of the other dozen or so Rocky movies. The Wrap doesn’t say what her character’s name is, but we’re hoping it’s somehow as cool as “Apollo Creed.” Can Assassin’s Creed be a woman’s name?
Creed stars Michael B. Jordan as Apollo Creed’s grandson, a young boxer following in his grandfather’s footsteps. Based on every other movie plot ever, his grandmother, Phylicia Rashad’s Assassin’s Creed, probably doesn’t approve. Also, pulling straight from the “because of course he does” file, Jordan’s character ends up getting trained by a certain old Italian man named Rocky Balboa. Presumably, that’s because a guy who is literally a million years old is the only person in the world who knows the best way to punch people. Creed is being directed by Ryan Coogler, who previously worked with Jordan on Fruitvale Station, and it also features Dear White People’s Tessa Thompson. As far as we know, there were no characters named Assassin’s Creed in either of those things.
