Pirates hack radio stations to play YG and Nipsey Hussle’s “Fuck Donald Trump”

As its name suggests, YG and Nipsey Hussle’s “Fuck Donald Trump” has a nuanced message about the current American political landscape. (That is, that President Donald Trump can go fuck himself, repeatedly and at length.) And while that’s a message a considerable amount of the music-listening public might be able to get behind, it’s not one most commercial radio stations would be comfortable broadcasting for themselves.

But in South Carolina and other states, that decision has been taken out of small-town broadcasters’ hands, with The Associated Press reporting that multiple radio stations have been hacked by anti-Trump protesters, replacing their usual mix of rock and oldies with the song euphemistically known as “FDT.” South Carolina’s Sunny 107.9 was the most recent victim, playing the song for a full 15 minutes; the station’s president, Frank Patterson, later went on Facebook to apologize to listeners and distance himself and the station from the song’s political message. (Patterson should probably count himself lucky that his transmitter wasn’t used to broadcast a sexually explicit furry podcast instead.) Similar incidents—facilitated by smaller radio stations hooking their low-cost broadcasting equipment up to the internet with inadequate network protection and firewalls—have occurred in Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas.

Meanwhile, “Fuck Donald Trump” has been getting (slightly) more authorized airplay elsewhere. A Portland radio station broadcast a clean edit of the song every hour on the weekend of the inauguration, while an unregistered pirate station in Seattle has been broadcasting the uncut song non-stop for more than a week.
