Pixar has announced its latest “almost, but not quite, like the real world” setting, treating fans at Disney’s D23 expo today to news of a film set in a “Suburban Fantasy World” containing “elves, sprites and pretty much anything that would be on the side of a van in the ’70s.”
That’s per director Dan Scanlon, who showed off a few clips of the untitled feature, including shots of trash-diving unicorns acting like the Tolkien equivalent of pesky raccoons. The film’s plot will apparently center on two kids tracking down a father they’ve never met, because it just wouldn’t be a Pixar movie without some sort of screwed-up filial dynamic.
Disney also showed off footage from another project, tentatively set for 2019. From descriptions of the footage, it sounds like it might turn out to be a sequel to the 2013 Pixar wannabe Planes, which should be a big thrill for all the Planes-heads in the audience.
