Playing House wants to be your new best TV friend

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Tuesday, April 29. All times are Eastern.

TOP PICK

Playing House (USA, 10 p.m.): A long time ago—like 2012, approximately—real-life comedy best friends Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair had a TV show called Best Friends Forever. And then they didn’t, because NBC misestimated the potential popularity of shows like Free Agents and The Playboy Club, leaving Best Friends Forever and Bent to wither on the midseason vine. But second chances are still possible in Hollywood, which is why Parham and St. Clair have been granted the chance to more or less remake Best Friends Forever, only with a pregnancy thrown into the mix. Molly Eichel likes what she sees from tonight’s hour-long premiere, which should pair well with this Firsties interview with Parham and St. Clair.

ALSO NOTED

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC, 8 p.m.): Cobie Smulders returns as Agent Hill—probably because somebody’s true love just died and now they’re lobbying their kids for the approval to boink Hill.

Supernatural (The CW, 9 p.m.): Eric Thurm knows where the true power is consolidated in Chicago: Organized crime families run by monsters. You see, because only one letter separates “monster” from “mobster”…

New Girl (Fox, 9 p.m.): Everyone helps Jess chaperone a middle school dance. If it’s anything like any of the middle school dances in Erik Adams’ past, this is going to be 17 minutes of nerves building up to five minutes of dancing to “Champagne Supernova” with a first crush.

REGULAR COVERAGE
The Originals (The CW, 8 p.m.)
Glee (Fox, 8 p.m.)
Supernatural (The CW, 9 p.m.)
The Mindy Project (Fox, 9:30 p.m.)
Fargo (FX, 10 p.m.)
Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.)

ELSEWHERE ON TV CLUB

Nico Lang provides an important For Our Consideration reminder: The real world is not TV Land, Lindsay Lohan is not Valerie Cherish, and Lindsay was not The Comeback—so maybe we should stop treating it as such?

WHAT ELSE IS ON

Storage Wars (A&E, 9:30 p.m.): The storage-locker-scavenging series brings its fifth season to a close.

Game Of Arms (AMC, 10 p.m.): The first season of the competitive arm-wrestling reality show ends.

Let’s Stay Together (BET, 11 p.m.): The fourth season (sensing a pattern?) of the sitcom reaches its climax. They probably stay together.

Spider-Man 2 (FX, 7 p.m.): This weekend, remember that there was a time when a Spider-Man sequel was cause for celebration, not dread.

Aliens (IFC, 8 p.m.): Ditto for whenever the follow-up to Prometheus surfaces.

Stanley Cup Playoff (NBC Sports, 7:30 p.m.): As illustrated elsewhere, the NHL and NBA have reached the point in their respective playoffs when there’s no way to know who’s playing in which matchup. Make the safe bet, and just assume this is an impossible meeting of the 1935 Montreal Maroons and the 1969 Oakland Seals.

NEW ON HOME VIDEO

Cue those contemplative piano chords: One of the most important series of the primetime drama revolution of the 1980s, Hill Street Blues, receives the complete-series set treatment. Todd VanDerWerff has the review—now let’s be careful out there.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Regular Show: The guys get a crash course in portraiture as they attempt to restore one of Benson’s most cherished possessions. And if they’re not too busy once they’re done with that, Alasdair Wilkins has always felt like he’d look good in oils…
