Please go see Suspiria, so Luca Guadagnino can make a sequel set in the year 1212
As we pointed out in our review of the film earlier this week, Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake isn’t going to be for everyone. In fact, we suspect that a good portion of moviegoers are going to hate it. So if decadent high-art witchcraft is your thing, as it is ours, please make a point of supporting the movie so we can get a sequel set in the year 1212.
Director Luca Guadagnino elaborates on his plans for a follow-up to The Playlist, describing a prequel about the medieval adventures of Tanz Academy headmistress Helena Markos: “I have this image in my mind of Helena Markos in solitude in the year 1212 in Scotland or in Spain,” he says. “Wandering through a village and trying to find a way on how she can manipulate the women of the village. I have this image. I know she was there, I know it was six to seven hundred years before the actual storyline of this film.”
If it’s anything like Ken Russell’s The Devils, we’re in. Guadagnino has previously expressed his interest, albeit in less detail in making a sequel to the film exploring the origins of Markos and her second-in-command Madame Blanc, both played by Tilda Swinton in the film. As for the possibility of Tilda returning for a sequel, he says, “I plot adventures with Tilda on a daily basis. This could be one. We have to see how audiences react.”
And although we’re not occult experts, a little light googling seems to support our suspicion that the number 12 has magical significance. Actual occult experts, feel free to chime in below.
