Police are investigating Chris Cornell’s death as a possible suicide

Hours after the news first broke that Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has died at the young age of 52, more details are starting to emerge about his death and his final concert. ABC affiliate WXYZ reports that Detroit police are investigating Cornell’s death as a possible suicide after a family friend, at the behest of Cornell’s wife, went to check up on him late last night and found him unresponsive on the floor of his hotel bathroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

If Cornell’s death was indeed a suicide, he showed little sign of his plans—at least not publicly. In what would become his final dispatch, he tweeted out his excitement about the show yesterday evening:

Video and pictures from the Fox Theatre show are already up on social media, including several YouTube videos of the event. Chillingly, one video discovered by NME indicates that the final song Cornell ever played was a medley of the Soundgarden song “Slaves & Bulldozers” and Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time Of Dying.” Cornell had played the song in concert before, but given his untimely death shortly thereafter, it takes on a new poignance.
