Power Rangers director calls the script “mature but playful,” like a fine wine
With language usually reserved for Whole Foods copywriters and waiters trying to convince you to pay way too much for a bottle of wine, the director of the upcoming Power Rangers movie reboot calls the script for the film “mature but still playful, buoyant and fun.” (It also presumably has oaky notes that dance across the palate.)
That quote comes from Dean Israelite, whose previous work includes the teen time-travel movie Project Almanac and who was brought on board to direct the new Power Rangers back in April. Now, if Lionsgate wanted to go with a darker, more “mature” version of something that is inherently pretty silly, it also could have hired Joseph Kahn, whose gritty Power/Rangers fan film has amassed nearly 15 million views since it hit YouTube in February. But Israelite prevailed, thanks to what sounds like a pretty kick-ass PowerPoint presentation:
When I opened the script I had no idea how it was going to be updated, and I was really impressed by it. So I put a really big presentation together, because I needed to win the job. There were a lot of guys going out for it and saw the potential in it, so I put a really big presentation together and was lucky enough to get the job.
So there you go—that dumb training session your work made you attend might pay off someday, provided you manage to become an up-and-coming Hollywood director in the meantime. Also, who really wants a serious Power Rangers movie?
