Praise Cheeses: Portland pizzeria shatters pizza ceiling with 101-cheese pie
In a perfect display of lilies being gilded, a Portland, Oregon pizzeria has decided to serve up a pizza containing 101 varieties of cheese. The owners of Scottie’s Pizza Parlor said that they were inspired by the Novantanove Formaggio, a 99-cheese pizza depicted in the 2014 remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Fearing that a mere 99 cheeses would be an admission of weakness (and hoping to best a 99-cheese pie by a Melbourne pizzeria), Scottie’s concocted first the Cento Formaggio, a 100-cheese pizza, during last week’s Portland Pizza Week. That pie includes a shredded 55-cheese blend, house-made ricotta, 36 soft cheeses, 9 grated dry cheeses, and a crisp of baked Parmiggiano-Reggiano. (The full list of cheeses can be found here.) For this, the restaurant was selling slices of the 100-cheese pizza for $2 each.
But then came last Sunday. According to The Oregonian, the restaurant invited a representative from the Guinness World Records to witness and certify what they claim to be a world record-shattering 101-cheese pizza. The 101th cheese? Stuffing mozzarella into the crust. It was available for one day only.
Restaurant owner Scottie Rivera told Fox News: “With the first bite, you don’t know what to expect, so you can almost mistake it for a regular slice. Then you chew a little more and you start to get a lot of character here: there’s things going on, it’s almost hard to place. It’s like a journey from the tip of the slice. It’s crazy and exciting to eat.”
The restaurant claims to have broken the world record on its Facebook page. The A.V. Club has reached out to The Guinness Book Of World Records for confirmation, and we’ll let you know when we hear back.
