Preview Sinoia Caves’ cult horror score for Beyond The Black Rainbow
Purveyors of nightmares lovingly rendered as collectible keepsakes, Death Waltz Records has become one of the most reliable stamps of quality in the vinyl collecting world. The British label’s reissues of cult soundtracks—some of the skuzziest films repackaged as the finest of album art objects—have included titles like The City Of The Living Dead, Ms. 45, Let The Right One In, Slumber Party Massacre, Room 237, and John Carpenter’s Assault On Precinct 13 (to name just a few in my personal collection), and soon, Twin Peaks. Just three years into its run, fanatics know that any new Death Waltz release, no matter how obscure, can be picked up on pure faith. And of course, American label Jagjaguwar has long since established itself as one of the most reliable sources of boundary-pushing indie music.
Now the two are joining forces to release Beyond The Black Rainbow, the score to Panos Cosmatos’ cult 2012 creeper. Much as Cosmatos’ film is meant to feel like a lost ’80s mind-bender that might have run on a double bill with Videodrome, the score by Jagjaguwar artist Sinoia Caves (a solo project of Black Mountain’s Jeremy Schmidt) recalls the classic, ominous synth-drone scores of Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder, Wendy Carlos, and, yes, John Carpenter, as well as modern practitioners of neon-lit night terrors like Cliff Martinez and Umberto. Have a listen to the haunting “Forever Dilating Eyes” below, and pre-order the vinyl score bundled with a DVD of the film here.
