We’re trying to keep this hush-hush, so don’t go around yelling about it, but Variety is reporting that ABC has canceled The Whispers, its spooky summer show about children befriending an invisible guy who likes to convince them to murder their parents. (Here’s a tip, kids: If your invisible friend tries to get you to murder your parents, he’s not really your friend.) The show was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and was loosely adapted from a Ray Bradbury story, but that pedigree couldn’t stop The Whispers from slowly bleeding away the reportedly sizable audience it picked up when it premiered. Variety says its finale “did a 0.7 in the demo,” which is industry-talk for “not very many people watched it,” but if we know anything about low-rated sci-fi shows on major networks, that doesn’t reflect the presumably passionate audience we assume this show had on social media. If such an audience does exist, they can at least take solace in the fact that now Lily Rabe and Milo Ventimiglia can go on to new and better(?) things.
