R.I.P. Bill Doss of Olivia Tremor Control

Bill Doss, one of the co-founders of the Elephant 6 Recording Company and a member of Olivia Tremor Control, has died. He was 44. No cause of death has been released.

Doss—along with fellow Louisianans and childhood friends Jeff Mangum, Will Hart, and Robert Schneider—created the Elephant 6 brand of rock in Athens, Georgia in the early '90s. Both together and separately, the men crafted psychedelic pop under the guise of a loose collective of bands that included Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples In Stereo, Of Montreal, Elf Power, and more. Hart and Doss’ band, Olivia Tremor Control, produced two of the genre’s most cohesive, song-based albums—1996’s Music From The Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist Castle and 1999’s Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One—before splitting up in 2000. Doss went on to release two records with his own band, The Sunshine Fix, and later joined Apples In Stereo.

Olivia Tremor Control reunited for All Tomorrow's Parties in 2005 and has toured on and off since. The band played the Pitchfork Music Festival earlier this month and Athens’ Georgia Theater on July 26, and just last year it released its first single in a decade. The band had also reportedly been discussing releasing a record of all-new material.
