There undoubtedly would have been science fiction fandom without Forrest J Ackerman, who has died in L.A. at the age of 92, but it would certainly have looked much different. The early booster, memorabilia collector, and publisher of Famous Monsters Of Filmland loomed large over several generations of fans. The L.A. Times has a fine obit, including a mention of Ackerman's forays into lesbian erotica and some sad details of his later years.
