R.I.P. Jim Dickinson

Legendary musician and producer Jim Dickinson died earlier today while recovering from bypass surgery in a Memphis hospital. As an in-demand session pianist in the '60s and '70s, Dickinson recorded with the likes of Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones and The Flamin' Groovies, and as a producer he helped Big Star, The Replacements and Mudhoney (among others) achieve a crisp. booming sound. Dickinson's sons Luther and Cody have continued in the family business, recording rootsy rock as North Mississippi Allstars. Inspired in part by his children (and by the young bands who were still knocking on his door, asking advice), Dickinson had recently returned to his own recording career, playing the bluesy, Delta-born music he loved. He will be missed.
