R.I.P. Sven Nykvist

The great Swedish cinematographer Sven Nykvist, known primarily for his work with director Ingmar Bergman, has died today at 83. He won an Oscar for two of those movies, Cries And Whispers and Fanny And Alexander, and was nominated for The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. It’s been said that the cinematographer’s greatest
challenge is interiors, since the heavens have already done a fine lighting job on the outdoors. In that respect, Nykvist was a master: His lighting could be supple and caressing at times, bold and penetrating at others, depending on the tone directors like Bergman were trying to establish. He will be missed.
