Rachel Bloom reverses the male gaze on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend characters
In a highly enjoyable effort to expose how gross casting notices for female roles can be, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend hero today Rachel Bloom wrote some descriptions of the male characters on her show in the style of a pervy dude. Through her Instagram account, Bloom filtered details about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend characters Josh, Greg, and Darryl through the “male gaze” often used when talking about women.
The results are not very specific, primarily image-based, and at times confounding. For Josh Chan, we’re supposed to “think Tom Cruise, Taye Diggs, Hercules from the Disney animated movie and the painting ‘Water Lilies’ by Claude Monet.” Those are just a bunch of dissimilar hot guys and a beautiful work of art. Being able to sing—which one would assume is a requirement on a musical like Crazy Ex—is only “a plus.”
Bloom undertook this project after she encountered the following egregiously demeaning calls for actresses via Backstage. Despite being a Golden Globe winner, she apparently still gets these emails. At least they inspire outrage and good material.
