Rapper Azealia Banks to play aspiring rapper in movie directed by RZA
According to Deadline, rapper Azealia Banks has just signed on to star in Coco, a drama film that’s going to be directed by RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. The movie will be about a young woman trying to become a rapper, but her parents demand that she finishes college first (presumably so she can get a bona fide degree in hip-hop or whatever). While in school, she “experiences the true calling of the power of the spoken word, which helps her goals as a hip-hop artist.” We assume that means she’ll give a really good speech or something in class, and then she decides that the speech would be even better with some beats behind it, and that’s how she invents rap music.
Deadline also notes that Coco is set in Brooklyn, which—as far as the rest of the world is concerned—is an unnecessarily specific way of saying that it’s set in New York City. In addition to Banks, it’ll also star Common (because he’s in everything these days), Jill Scott, Lucien Laviscount, Lorraine Toussaint, and Hana Mae Lee. Also, if you don’t follow hip-hop, you might remember Banks from the crazy feud she had with Iggy Azalea back in December.
