Raymond Cruz to play Ariel Castro in Lifetime’s Michelle Knight Story
Lately, Lifetime has been trying to claim more territory in the trashy unauthorized celebrity biopic game, but that’s just a distraction from the network’s true calling: equally trashy TV movies about horrible things that happened in real life. Now, though, Lifetime is coming back to claim the crown that it was born to wear with The Michelle Knight Story, a movie about one of the women who was kidnapped and held captive by a man named Ariel Castro for 11 years. You do your thing, Lifetime. Haters gonna hate hate hate.
Anyway, we last reported on The Michelle Knight Story back in May when Lifetime announced that it was working on adapting the horrible true story, but now Deadline says the network is officially moving forward with the project. As suggested by the title, the movie will focus on Michelle Knight, the woman who Castro kidnapped in 2002 and forced to help deliver the baby of fellow-victim Amanda Berry—who had gotten pregnant after being raped by Castro. Knight, Berry, third victim Gina DeJesus, and the child all escaped in May of 2013 with the help of a neighbor. Castro was arrested, convicted to life in prison plus 1,000 years, and then killed himself with his bedsheets, which officially makes this the perfect story for a Lifetime movie—even if it does make us feel super gross for saying that.
Lifetime has also managed to find someone to play Castro, and it’s none other than Breaking Bad‘s Raymond “Tuco” Cruz. We don’t know if Cruz will be able to pull off the same kind of insane performance that Rob Lowe did in Drew Peterson: Untouchable, but we’re excited to see him try. And yes, we also feel super gross for saying that.
