When it was announced that Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey, was closing its doors, it felt like the end of an era to many lovers of alternative rock. Opened in the late ‘70s, the club was a notoriously hot, unkempt place where acts like Nirvana and R.E.M. played before they were famous. It was also the center for the burgeoning Hoboken music scene in Hoboken that included A.V. Undercover alums Yo La Tengo and Bob Mould. Due to changing demographics and the rise of Brooklyn as a music mecca, the owners of Maxwell's have decided to move on. To honor the seminal venue, Vulture has assembled an oral history of Maxwell's, with anecdotes from the owners, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Mike Mills of R.E.M., David Cross (who tells a story about how someone once peed on him there) and a host of others. It's an awesome way to learn just how important the club was for alt rock and everything that’s come after.
