Opening up to strangers about your thoughts and feelings regarding a dead member of your family is an almost unthinkable exercise. It’s one made even more difficult when said family member is an internationally worshiped rock and roll icon. But with a new documentary set to debut titled Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, 22 year-old Frances Bean Cobain finally felt ready to do just that. In a concise and candid interview with Rolling Stone editor David Fricke, Cobain talks at length for the first time about living with the legacy of her father as well as the new film that she executive produced.
One of the more surprising revelations from the interview is the fact that she’s not really that big of a fan of her late father’s band. “I don’t really like Nirvana that much,” she admits. “Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre.”
She also describes the affectations and mannerisms she shares with her father as pointed out to her by the surviving members of Nirvana. “Dave [Grohl], Krist [Novoselic] and Pat [Smear] came over to a house where I was living,” she remembered. “They had what I call the ‘K. C. Jeebies,’ which is when they see me, they see Kurt. They look at me, and you can see they’re looking at a ghost. They were all getting the K. C. Jeebies hardcore. Dave said, ‘She is so much like Kurt.’ They were all talking amongst themselves, rehashing old stories I’d heard a million times. I was sitting in a chair, chain-smoking, looking down like this [affects total boredom]. And they went, ‘You are doing exactly what your father would have done.’”
