Rebellion takes a violent toll in the new Westworld season 2 trailer

“Did you ever stop to wonder about your actions? The price you’d have to pay if there was a reckoning? …That reckoning is here.” With these words from Evan Rachel Woods’ Dolores, the action begins in what’s easily the darkest Westworld trailer yet.

The main impression is that of bodies everywhere. In the water, on the plains, in the dusty town streets, and even (especially?) inside the Delos facility where those behind the scenes of the fantastical theme park labor. The hosts look to be fighting for their existence, a fight that comes with a lot of bloodshed—much of which is thanks to the humans struggling to contain the rebellion. It’s no longer just Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) who seems to be traveling outside the confines of the Old West universe built in the park, as Dolores is seen wearing a very elegant gown and roaming through finely wrought interiors and outdoor areas. The man in black is talking about how the stakes in Westworld are finally real, and announcing his intention to burn it all to the ground. We even get a brief shot of Jimmie Simpson’s William, confirming the backstory of Ed Harris’ bleak character will continue to be explored.

Set to a swooping orchestral cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box,” it all conveys the impression of a park in which the hosts haven’t just taken over: They have a plan for something much bigger. (Perhaps it involves that creepy white robot dumping a body.) And yet, Maeve still just wants to be with her daughter. The very things that make the hosts more than human may be counterbalanced by those pesky emotions. We’ll begin tunneling further down the rabbit hole when Westworld season two begins April 22.
