Red Dead Redemption II's first gameplay trailer looks great, has a lot of horses

Rockstar Games has released a couple of trailers for Red Dead Redemption II already, but they were both centered on the story and the general tone of the game’s Wild West setting. Finally, with just a few months to go before we get what will hopefully be another heartbreaking ode to the pointlessness of cowboy violence, Rockstar has given us a proper gameplay trailer that shows just how that heartbreaking cowboy violence will work this time around.

Spread across six minutes, the trailer methodically explains how a bunch of its systems work, with a newfound focus on base-building, hunting, and foraging. They’ve also lavished attention on your relationship with your horse, which, if you’ve played the first game, you know grows to be pretty strong over the course of a few dozen hours. And, obviously, it looks incredible, a dusty frontier covered in fog and flora and believable, ramshackle settlements.

Red Dead Redemption II is a prequel to the previous game, focusing on the Van Der Linde Gang that original Redemption protagonist John Marston was a member of before he tried to go straight. Red Dead Redemption II will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26—assuming it doesn’t get delayed again, but Rockstar wouldn’t do that to us a third time.
