Reddit out to break the Guinness World Record for largest Secret Santa exchange again
Money can’t buy you love, but it can buy you a Guinness World Record. At least that’s the hope of time-wasting website Reddit, which aims to break the world record for the largest holiday gift exchange—again. Having beaten the record in 2011 with 30,240 participants and 2012 with 44,805 participants, it seems likely the site will once again best itself in 2013, as Entertainment Weekly reports that Reddit is teaming with truTV’s new series Guinness World Records Unleashed in hopes of bringing its (five? six?) fans to the project as well. If the campaign is successful, participants will be able to request an official Guinness World Record certificate, which they can casually whip out on first dates and job interviews.
Anyone wanting to participate can sign up on the Redditgifts Secret Santa site, where you can also fill out a survey of likes and dislikes to help Secret Santas with the gift buying process. With 23 days to go until sign-up ends on December 2, the site has already reached 82 percent of its goal of 65,000 participants. All gifts must be shipped by December 20, and Reddit recommends spending around $20 (though the site passive aggressively adds, “Many people choose to spend more than the minimum, but it’s not required”). Presumably extra points go to anyone who pulls a Michael Scott and buys a video iPod.
