Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara fight, flirt and fire guns in the Hot Pursuit trailer

Fans of female-led action comedies can finally give their weathered copies of The Heat a rest, as there’s a new trailer out for the Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara buddy comedy Hot Pursuit (formerly known as Don’t Mess With Texas). Witherspoon plays an adorably by-the-book cop tasked with protecting Vergara’s obnoxious police informant from the paid assassins and crooked cops sent to kill her by the ruthless drug lord she’s testifying against. (It’s a little like the plot of Midnight Run, just one more data point in the long-running argument that Sofia Vergara is the Charles Grodin of modern cinema.) Along the way, they bicker, do some fake gay stuff in front of Jim Gaffigan, and distract their male enemies by describing their periods. After all, nothing says “female empowerment” like faux-lesbian titillation and vilification of basic bodily functions.

But hey, how often do you get to see Reese Witherspoon running around, waving a gun and making cocaine jokes? Plus, there’s a pretty funny running gag about her increasingly diminishing stature and Vergara’s rapidly escalating age that’s worth the (free) price of admission on its own. Hot Pursuit will be in theaters on May 8.
