Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, and Martin Short are also joining Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice

After assembling a superteam of Hollywood’s shaggiest, frequently stewed male actors for its stoner detective story, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice has also stirred the increasingly potent Reese Witherspoon into the mix. Anderson was clearly impressed with Witherspoon’s recent audition reel, in which she deftly interpreted Thomas Pynchon’s tale of inebriated upstarts challenging the police, though it’s also the culmination of years of trying to work together, after Anderson originally sought her for Amy Adams’ role in The Master. She’ll join her Walk The Line co-star Joaquin Phoenix and previously confirmed co-stars Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, and Kevin J. O’Connor in an as-yet-unconfirmed role, though Cigarettes & Red Vines believes she’ll be playing Shasta Fay Hepworth, the ex-girlfriend of Phoenix’s character who sets the plot in motion. Also just added to the cast, according to The Wrap: Jena Malone, playing recovering acid casualty Japonica Fenway, and Martin Short, possibly as Malone’s father or in some other role altogether—like maybe a grown-up Clifford, just to make this whole experience even more hallucinatory.
