Regis Philbin announced on today’s Live! With Regis And Kelly that he will be retiring from the morning talk show grind, bringing to a close his 28-year run sometime near the end of this summer. “This will be my last year on this show," Philbin said. "It’s been a long time. It was the biggest thrill of my life.” He then added, “There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people," jokingly referring to the same Logan’s Run regulations that recently forced Larry King into early retirement, setting him on his current mad scramble for an abandoned space colony. As when Kathie Lee Gifford left the show, lured by the scent of an uncorked bottle of pinot grigio to the Today set, Philbin says the Live! franchise will continue without him, presumably after co-host Kelly Ripa finds another older man she can begrudgingly patronize. Philbin later added, “I’m not going to retire, I will just be gone,” suggesting his final episode will find him simply evaporating. Here’s a preview.
