Renée Zellweger to make the jump to TV with neo-noir Netflix series What/If
Following the lead of far too many other movie stars (most recently Jake Gyllenhaal), Renée Zellweger has been forced to move over to the TV world, with Netflix announcing that she’ll be starring in a new “neo-noir social thriller” called What/If. This will be Zellweger’s first regular TV gig, having previously spent decades as a proper movie star, and she’ll be playing a “mysterious woman” who makes a “lucrative, but dubious” offer to a pair of newlyweds. We don’t know exactly what that offer is, but the official description also mentions that What/If is about “the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things,” so we can assume the offer involves something… “unacceptable.”
Along with Zellweger, the 10-episode series will star Blake Jenner, Jane Levy, Samantha Ware, Kieth Powers, Daniella Pineda, and Louis Herthum (Westworld’s Peter Abernathy!). Netflix has released an ominous teaser, implying Zellweger is some kind of evil mastermind who doesn’t really know how to play Chess, and it ends with a reveal that the series will premiere on May 24.
