Retired wizard Michael Gambon joins David Tennant and Elisabeth Moss in Metanoia

Much like Ian McKellen, Michael Gambon has done just fine after a notable late-career turn as a beloved wizard. (He played Dumbledore in six Harry Potter movies, finishing with Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.) He followed that up with a role on HBO’s Luck, which might have lasted longer were it not for the show’s rough streak with horses dying on set. More recently, Gambon has transitioned nicely with another J.K. Rowling adaptation in The Casual Vacancy and a starring role as Winston Churchill in the upcoming Churchill’s Secret on PBS. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the 74-year-old actor is joining David Tennant and Elisabeth Moss in Metanoia, a biopic chronicling the life of renowned Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing. Laing was famous for his work with psychotic and schizophrenic patients in the mid-20th century, as well as his support of LSD for medical purposes.

Robert Mullan will direct the project, with Phin Glynn and Peter Dunphy executive producing. It’s unclear at this point who Gambon will play or whether his character is treated with LSD at any point, but shooting starts in January, so stay tuned, fans of white-haired actors on fake acid trips.
