The least convincing retirement since Jay-Z rapped about his comeback on his farewell album continues, as former filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who is no longer making films, is making a new film for HBO. Mosaic stars Sharon Stone, and is described by Deadline as an experimental film, with the experiment in question involving an app that determines the film’s ending. (And at only five or six points during the movie’s running time will it probably ask you to download an update.)
Filming starts next month in Utah, and as usual, Soderbergh is being tight-lipped about details—no other cast members have been confirmed, although Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) is rumored to appear. But the director did say it “represents a fresh way of experiencing a story and sharing that experience with others.” He also confidently predicts the film “will require a new Emmy category, and we will be the only eligible nominee,” although “Best Made-For-Premium-Cable Movie By A Retired Director That Requires In-App Purchases” might be too specific for the staid Emmy committee. And if they do create that category, odds are good they‘ll still give the award to Frasier.
