Rian Johnson has nothing to do with Star Wars: Episode IX
Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams supposedly had some input on where the series would go in subsequent movies, but it sounds like The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson isn’t getting that same opportunity. As reported by Comicbook.com, a fan recently asked Johnson on Twitter if he wrote a “story treatment” for Episode IX, and he responded by saying that he actually hasn’t been involved in writing for the sequel at all:
This far away from the release of The Last Jedi, it’s hard to tell if this is a good or bad thing, but it’s probably not an indication that Disney lacks confidence in Johnson’s Star Wars movie. If anything, it probably just means that the studio now has the overall narrative of these movies locked down so tightly that it simply doesn’t need his input. Plus, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is directing Episode IX, and he probably doesn’t need Rian Johnson coming in and demanding that everybody in the movie put on weird makeup so they look more like Bruce Willis.
