Richard Linklater embraces the (early) ’80s in the Everybody Wants Some trailer

The first trailer for Everybody Wants Some, Richard Linklater’s long-awaited (but what Linklater movies aren’t long awaited these days?) “spiritual sequel” to Dazed And Confused, has hit the internet. Like its companion film—which is name-checked twice in the trailer—this early look at the film (formerly known as That’s What I’m Talking About) conveys a strong sense of time and place, namely Austin, Texas in the early ’80s. But while Linklater’s new slacker comedy clearly trades in high school parties for collegiate high jinks, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the early ‘80s for the late ’70s, what with all the luxurious mustaches and bong smoking going on in the trailer. Further proof that the more things change, the more they stay the same comes from our freshman protagonists’ fixation on beer, baseball, and girls, not far off from the preoccupations of the high schoolers in Dazed And Confused.

You’ll keep getting older, but Everybody Wants Some will stay the same age until it opens SXSW in March, followed by a nationwide theatrical run on April 15.
