Rick Springfield to reign over Supernatural’s underworld

Extending an unlikely but successful comeback attempt, ’80s pop idol Rick Springfield is continuing his journey back into the world of acting. He returned to the big screen for the first time in decades to star with Meryl Streep in last year’s Ricki And The Flash, and made a nearly unrecognizable cameo on True Detective’s second season. Building on that momentum, Springfield has now taken on the role of one of Lucifer’s incarnations on The CW’s long-running Supernatural.

Last season, Lucifer took over Castiel (Misha Collins)’s body; as season 12 begins Lucifer will be looking for a new vessel to inhabit, setting his sights toward Springfield’s Vince Vicente, “a rock star who’s a little bit on the down side who’s trying to come back.” It’s a close-but-not-quite fit for Springfield; although his last big hits were years ago, he continues to tour and recently released his 18th album, Rocket Science. And as our recent Random Roles with him reveals, he has more dramatic credits than you might imagine.

You can welcome our new Dark Overlord Rick Springfield when Supernatural returns for season 12 on Thursday, October 13.
