Ricky Gervais cranks up the cringe factor in the David Brent: Life On The Road trailer
Over a decade has passed since the end of Ricky Gervais’ The Office, but emotionally needy, casually inappropriate middle manager David Brent remains the character with which the comedian is most closely associated. And now, the former Wernham-Hogg honcho is back in a feature-length production from BBC Films, David Brent: Life On The Road. As the new teaser trailer shows, David is more than a decade older, but seemingly not a day wiser. He’s still way oversold on his own talents, and he still manages to irritate and offend his blighted coworkers on a daily basis. Gervais, who is writing and directing as well as starring, has make it clear that Life On The Road is not a The Office movie, it’s more of a “where are they now?” story. So where is David Brent now? Well, he’s still working in an office, this time as a sales rep. But the film is mostly about how the character as he continues to pursue his dreams of rock stardom well into middle age.
The movie will show the delusional Brent traveling throughout England on a mostly self-funded tour. He’s sort of a misguided Don Quixote with an electric guitar and a catalog of terrible songs with infantile innuendos in the lyrics. Gervais has also promised that the film will delve deeply into the character’s personal life. For this teaser, however, David Brent is shown in his natural habitat: a dreary-looking office where people wince when he approaches. Some things never change.
David Brent: Life On The Road opens in the U.K. on August 19, 2016. A U.S. release date has not yet been set.
